Saving the Polar Bears?

November 1st, 2009

A lot of people say that the polar bears are doomed. But are they really? According to an article published by Stephanie Pfirman and Bruno Tremblay on October 30th, 2009, we still have a chance at saving them. Although the Arctic sea ice is supposed to be gone by the summer of 2040, half a million square kilometers of sea ice may still remain until at least 2100.

This ice will most likely be found on the Northern Coasts of the Canadian Arctic archipelago and Greenland. The oldest and thickest ice we have now is also found there. The hope is that this region will provide a sort of sanctuary for those animals that rely on sea ice all year round. The longer the sea ice survives, the longer the ice-dependant species will remain.

However, the survival of these specieses is totally up to us. The bottom line is that we need a plan. When the sea ice in the Arctic Ocean melts, the area will be more accessible to humans. This means that we will most likely make our mark on this region, with new developments, shipping, and of course, tourism. This will make the adaptaion for ecosystems even harder. We need a way to monitor and manage the remaining habitats, and their supplies of ice from other areas. Only when we have this done will this species finally be safe.

Do you have any ideas about how to do monitor this?

I think that we need to be aware of what’s happening around us and the things that are happening to God’s creatures. I think that we need to help the animals as much as we can but more than anything keep the animals where they are meant to be. If we move the animals to any place other than where they are meant to be we are really only harming them.

I think we could cut back on things and products that are harmful to are ecosystem and that are polluting the air we breathe and playing a big factor in global warming. We cannot deny that global warming is happening and we continue to do and use things that are major contributers to it.

I think we should monitor how much waste we are putting into the ozone and try to cut back on things we don’t need. The animals have right on earth and we are ruining there ability to live.

I think that I am not sure what needs to be done. I do know though that we need to quit taking out animals homes away. Like re-doing fields and putting houses there, animals could have had homes there.

I agree with you Tiffany. We need to be aware of what’s going on around us and stop trying to move these animals to a different place then their natural habitat. These animals have the right to llive just like us humans. So why take that right away from them?

I think that it isnt right that most of the people in the world dont care enouph about our animals. We need to take time to really watch what we are just throwing away and be more concerned with the animals and where they could have a home.

I think that people should do more for the environment. If you sit around all day and do nothing to help the planet is really gonna go bad. It really is starting with the polar bears and their place to live.

I think that we need to care more about the animals and do everything we can to save them. I know that i dont really think about what is going on with the animals like the polar bears and i need to, so do others. I think the polar bears need to live in their natural habitat because that is what they are used to and all they know. We need to do all we can to protect them and their homes.
