Scientists examine the disease carrying capacity of rats

November 1st, 2009

The article from the Science Daily titled ”21st Century Plague? Rat Fleas Spread Heart-damaging Bacteria“,discussed new scientific testing on disease carrying capacity of rats. In the research, the scientists found that the true culprit was the fleas on the rats. In the article, professor Chao-Chin Chang from the university of Taiwan discussed the discovery of new pathogens which can cause a variety of ailments from heart disease to infection of the spleen and nervous system.

One patient who had traveled to South America was found to have a pathogen in his spleen. This pathogen was new and was given the name Bartonella rochalimae. Many rats and fleas carry a large variety of disease causing organisms. The scientists investigating these new discoveries concerning the bacteria carried by rodents and fleas admit that their study group was limited, but they have found enough evidence to show that this needs to be investigated in more depth.

Do you think this needs to be investigated more?

How do you think this problem can be handled ?

I firmly believe that this needs to be investigated further. Because wasn’t it the fleas on rats that caused the black plague? I think that this problem could be handled by more investigation. Also people should make sure that their homes are sanitary and if they do have a problem with rats to get it taken care of immediately. This could potentially turn into a real problem and needs to monitored and people should be very careful.

I do think that this needs to be investigated more! If and when we stop researching it, is when things get spread. I think that this problem can be handled by taking the time to pay attention to what the rats may be carrying. We can also treat early or identify those things that they are already carrying.

Yes I think that we should investigate this alot more because it attacks important organs like the spleen and heart. We could solve this problem by having tests on volenteers who have this infection and test the fleas on the rats.

Yes I think that we should investigate further. This seems like something that could be very harmful we should look into it and see more about what this flea is carrying.

I think that we should investigate this more. WE should have people be tested so we can help lower the chance of others getting it.
